There's also a genuine tool cost hiding underneath most DIY projects, buying specialized equipment for a single job often costs more than simply renting it, or than the labor premium a professional would have charged in the first place. And a mistake made by an inexperienced DIYer can sometimes cost more to actually fix afterward than the entire project would have cost to hire out correctly from the start

None of this argues against DIY generally, plenty of projects genuinely are worth doing yourself, especially ones you'll repeat. Curious whether people have ever actually tracked their real total hours and costs on a DIY project honestly, rather than just comparing the sticker price of materials against a quoted professional estimate
