The hidden cost of doing it yourself instead of hiring a pro, nobody mentions

[Theo90]

DIY projects get pitched almost entirely around the labor cost you're saving by doing the work yourself instead of paying someone else. What rarely gets counted honestly is the actual time investment, especially for a first attempt, where a professional's practiced hour can easily take a beginner an entire weekend, plus the real learning curve of mistakes along the way

There's also a genuine tool cost hiding underneath most DIY projects, buying specialized equipment for a single job often costs more than simply renting it, or than the labor premium a professional would have charged in the first place. And a mistake made by an inexperienced DIYer can sometimes cost more to actually fix afterward than the entire project would have cost to hire out correctly from the start

None of this argues against DIY generally, plenty of projects genuinely are worth doing yourself, especially ones you'll repeat. Curious whether people have ever actually tracked their real total hours and costs on a DIY project honestly, rather than just comparing the sticker price of materials against a quoted professional estimate

Tracked this honestly on one project and my actual hourly rate worked out embarrassingly low once I counted every hour including the mistakes

The specialized tool cost is the trap that gets me every time, ends up cheaper to rent for a single job than to buy something I'll use once

[Candle99]

Had a DIY mistake once that genuinely cost more to fix professionally afterward than just hiring the job out properly from the very start would have

[Anthony]

This is such a fair breakdown, DIY makes way more sense for things you'll actually repeat regularly rather than genuine one-off projects

[HeartbreakKidOscar97]

Burst water pipes, flooring knackered. Plasterboard needing ripping out. Triple checking may not be enough

Worth being honest with yourself about your actual skill level before starting, that's the variable that determines whether this math works out in your favor or against it
