Not every DIY job needs to be perfect. Sometimes the best solution is a clever bodge, using whatever you have to hand to fix a problem quickly. Done right, a bodge can last for years. Done wrong, it becomes a family legend for all the wrong reasons

We have all seen the classics. Cable ties holding a car bumper together, duct tape on a leaking pipe, a wedged piece of cardboard keeping a door shut or a wooden spoon holding up a shelf. There is something deeply satisfying about solving a problem with ingenuity rather than money. Some bodges are so good that they never get replaced with a proper fix

My proudest bodge is a broken fridge door handle that I replaced with an old drawer handle and two bolts. It was meant to be temporary until the proper part arrived. That was six years ago. The proper part is still in its packaging

Please share your favourite bodges, along with how long they lasted. Photos are welcome. Just a gentle reminder to avoid bodging anything involving gas, electrics or safety equipment, which is always a job for professionals

What is your proudest bodge?
