Autumn is the season of jobs that are easy to put off and expensive to ignore. Once the first cold snap arrives, any problems with the heating, gutters or windows suddenly become urgent. Getting a few small jobs done in October can save a lot of hassle in January. Most of us know exactly what we should be doing, even if we have not started

Typical jobs include bleeding radiators, servicing the boiler, clearing gutters, checking roof tiles, draught proofing doors and windows and insulating outdoor pipes. In the garden, people put away furniture, clean tools, tidy borders and get the lawn ready for winter. Cars need attention too, like checking tyres, wipers, antifreeze and batteries

My list this year includes fitting draught excluders to the front door, clearing out the gutters and finally insulating the loft hatch, which lets a cold draught straight into the landing. The loft hatch job has been on my list for three winters in a row. This year, I promise

With energy bills still high for many people, small jobs like draught proofing and bleeding radiators can make a noticeable difference. Feel free to share tips for cheap ways to keep the house warm. Tricks that cost nothing are especially welcome

What jobs are on your list before winter? And which one have you been putting off the longest?
