Every computer user has a file format that makes them sigh. It might be a scanned PDF that cannot be searched, a Word document with a screenshot pasted inside it, a photo in a format your old laptop will not open or a zip file containing another zip file. Some formats are simply outdated, while others are fine in theory but misused constantly. Either way, they waste a lot of time

There are plenty of candidates. HEIC photos from iPhones still cause compatibility headaches on some systems. RAR archives need extra software on many machines. PDF forms that cannot be filled in digitally force people to print, write and scan them again. Old formats like WMA, XPS and early Office files still turn up in inboxes, often from organisations that never updated their systems

My personal enemy is the PDF that is just a photo of a printed document. You cannot search it, copy text from it or read it properly on a phone. Often it is slightly crooked as well. When it is an important form from a company, the frustration doubles, since you have to print it, fill it in and scan it back

I am curious which formats annoy people most, and whether there are good tools for dealing with them. Some problems, like scanned PDFs, can be fixed with text recognition tools. Others just need the sender to change their habits, which is much harder

Which file format do you wish would disappear forever? And which one do you wish everyone used instead?
