What Is the Most Underrated Programming Language Right Now

Not asking about the most popular or the most hyped. Asking about the language that you think does something genuinely well that its mindshare does not reflect.

Could be a language that solves a specific class of problem elegantly, one that has excellent tooling that is underappreciated, one that is influential beyond its user base, or one that you think is better than its reputation suggests.

Clojure. The REPL-driven development workflow and the immutable data structures produce a specific kind of confidence in running code that I have not found in other languages. The Lisp syntax is a genuine barrier but it is worth getting past

Elixir for anything involving concurrency and fault tolerance. The actor model via OTP is extraordinarily well suited to modern distributed systems and the language is pleasant to work in. Genuinely underrated relative to what it offers

Nim. Compiled, fast, Python-like syntax, very little magic. Gets almost no attention despite doing most of what people use Go for with a nicer language

Janet. A Lisp you can embed, script with, or use as a systems language. Small, consistent, well-documented. The kind of language you discover and then use for everything that fits
