Some of the most useful software in the world is completely free. Open source projects, small developers and generous companies have produced tools that rival expensive paid alternatives. Yet many of these gems remain unknown outside enthusiast circles. Let's share some of the best

There are some famous examples, like VLC, LibreOffice, GIMP, Blender, OBS Studio and Audacity. But there are many smaller tools that deserve more attention. Utilities for file searching, screen capture, disk cleanup, PDF editing, note taking, photo management and backup can all be found for free. Some of them outperform paid software in their category. Open source projects in particular deserve more credit

My pick is Everything, a file search tool for Windows that finds any file on your computer instantly as you type. Windows search is painfully slow by comparison. It is tiny, free and makes finding things effortless. I install it on every PC I set up

Please share what the software does, which platforms it runs on and why you love it. Free and open source projects are especially welcome, but free versions of commercial tools count too, as long as they are useful without paying
