Apple's browser is getting some long requested features. 9to5Mac reports that iOS 27.3 and macOS 27.3 add Vertical Tabs, Adaptive Dark Mode and more to Safari

Vertical Tabs move tabs into a column on the left side. They appear as icons by default, and the bar can be widened to show page titles. On iPhone, the feature is turned on in Safari's settings, while on Mac and iPad it is in the View menu

Adaptive Dark Mode offers a Try button on websites that do not have their own dark theme, and Safari then generates a dark version. It can be applied automatically or site by site. Siri can now move, sort, organise and close tabs too, with fuller awareness of whole web pages promised in a future update

The features are in the first developer betas, with public release expected in December. Vertical tabs were popularised by the Arc browser, which The Browser Company plans to discontinue in December, and the features may change before release

Vertical tabs make a lot of sense on today's wide screens, and Arc fans looking for a new home may find Safari more appealing. Automatic dark mode for any website is a lovely touch for night time browsing. These are thoughtful improvements rather than flashy ones

Do you prefer vertical or horizontal tabs? And will these changes tempt you to use Safari more?

Vertical tabs are brilliant on wide screens. Horizontal tabs get tiny when you have lots open. I switched years ago and never looked back
