Python vs JavaScript in 2026 - Which Do You Actually Recommend to Beginners

The perennial debate but with a 2026 twist: AI coding tools have changed the learning path significantly. The availability of Claude Code, Copilot and similar tools means beginners can get working code faster than ever, but arguably understand it less. The choice of first language interacts with how you use those tools.

Python still dominates data science and AI tooling. JavaScript still dominates the web and has the most job postings. Both are reasonable first languages for different reasons.

What would you actually recommend to someone starting from scratch today, and does the AI tooling situation change your answer?

Python without hesitation for anyone interested in data, AI, or automation. The syntax is readable enough that AI-generated code is easier to understand and learn from than JavaScript equivalents

JavaScript if their goal is visible results fast. Seeing something in a browser immediately is a powerful motivator and the path from hello world to something a friend can look at is shorter
