WhatsApp remains the default choice for a lot of friend groups worldwide, largely due to network effects rather than it necessarily being the best designed option available now. Cross platform compatibility and low data usage made it the obvious pick for years. Curious whether people think it still deserves the default slot or whether better alternatives have quietly caught up

Discord has genuinely taken over for a lot of younger and gaming adjacent friend groups specifically, offering better organization for ongoing group conversations through channels and threads. Signal's privacy focus has also won over a meaningful chunk of more security conscious users. Feels like the answer genuinely varies a lot depending on the specific group's priorities and demographics

What's actually keeping your friend group connected these days. Curious how differently people's answers land here

Discord completely took over my main friend group a couple years back, mostly because the channel structure lets us separate serious planning conversations from constant meme spam. WhatsApp just becomes one giant unorganized thread eventually with no way to separate topics cleanly. Structure matters a lot once a group chat gets big enough

iMessage still wins for my specific group purely because everyone already has an iPhone, which makes the whole reaction and tapback system genuinely seamless. Falls apart completely the moment someone in the group has an Android phone though. Ecosystem lock-in cuts both ways depending on your specific friend group's devices

Group chats through actual group video call apps have quietly become our main hangout format instead of any single messaging app specifically. Async text messaging just doesn't capture the same feeling as an actual scheduled voice hangout. Different problem entirely from pure text based group coordination

Signal's become the default for my closest group specifically after a few genuine privacy concerns a while back, and honestly the interface has caught up enough that it doesn't feel like a downgrade anymore.

Smaller network effect than WhatsApp still limits wider adoption though. Depends heavily on how much your specific group actually prioritizes that privacy angle

Telegrams actually quietly become the default for my group, mostly due to better file sharing limits and a genuinely useful bot ecosystem for organizing group events. Doesn't get mentioned in these debates nearly as often as Discord or WhatsApp. Underrated option depending on what your group actually needs from it
It's only banter... mostly

WhatsApps still winning for my international friend group purely because of how universal it is outside the US specifically. Every single person already has it regardless of what phone or country they're in. That universality is honestly hard for any competitor to fully replicate globally
