When you delete a file and empty the recycle bin or trash, your computer does not actually go through and erase the specific data itself right away. Instead, it simply marks the specific storage space that file was occupying as available for reuse, removing the file's entry from a kind of internal index the operating system uses to keep track of exactly what data lives where on the actual drive.

That is precisely why data recovery software can often successfully bring back a deleted file. The actual underlying data itself is typically still physically sitting there completely intact on the drive, just no longer indexed or tracked as belonging to anything, until eventually some new file genuinely gets written directly over that exact same specific physical space.

On a traditional spinning hard drive, this recovery window can genuinely last a very long time if the drive stays otherwise mostly unused, since nothing is actively overwriting that leftover data. On a modern solid state drive though, a background process called TRIM often proactively cleans up that marked as free space fairly quickly, specifically to keep the drive's overall performance running efficiently, which meaningfully shortens how long a deleted file actually stays realistically recoverable.

This exact same underlying mechanism is precisely why securely wiping a drive before selling or properly disposing of an old computer genuinely requires more than just a normal standard delete. Actually overwriting that leftover physical data multiple times, or using full disk encryption from the very start, is what actually and genuinely prevents recovery of sensitive files by someone else later.

The TRIM explanation for solid state drives is the piece missing from most basic explanations of this topic.

Makes complete sense why recovering something from an SSD is often noticeably harder than from an old fashioned spinning hard drive

Does formatting an entire drive work through this exact same basic underlying mechanism. Or does that specific process actually go further and really wipe things more thoroughly than a normal simple delete does?

This clears up why my old laptop felt like it had way more actual usable free space right after I did a proper full secure wipe compared to just doing a simple regular file deletion beforehand.
