Explain it like I'm five: what actually is 'the cloud'

There's no actual cloud, it's just someone else's computer, sitting in a big building somewhere, doing the work or storing the files instead of your own device having to do it. When you save a photo to the cloud, you're really just sending it over the internet to sit on a hard drive inside a massive warehouse full of servers owned by a company like Google or Amazon

The reason this feels magical is that those warehouses, called data centers, are built with so many backup copies and redundant systems that your file effectively never disappears, even if any single hard drive inside actually fails. You're borrowing a tiny slice of an enormous, extremely reliable machine instead of relying on the one much less reliable device sitting on your own desk

This is also why cloud services need your internet connection to actually work, you're not really running anything locally, you're constantly sending requests to that distant warehouse and getting answers back.
