Apple has been ordered to open up the iPhone to rival app stores in Australia. MacRumors' Hartley Charlton reports that Australia's Federal Court has told Apple to allow competing app stores, direct downloads and alternative payment services for users whose Apple account is set to Australia

The changes take effect at noon Melbourne time on 1 March 2027. The order follows the court's August 2025 finding that Apple misused its market power, in the case brought by Epic Games

There are several key rules. Apple cannot charge commission on purchases made through alternative payments in apps distributed outside the App Store, and App Store fees will be capped. Apps installed from outside the App Store must still pass an automated security scan and be notarised by Apple or an approved third party

Apple says it will appeal and ask the court to pause the order. It can also apply between 1 and 15 February 2027 for an extension until 3 May. Epic says Fortnite will return to the Australian App Store as a result of the ruling

Australia joins the EU and Japan in forcing Apple to open its platform. Each country seems to be building its own version of the rules, which makes life complicated for developers. Users in Australia will soon have more choice, whether they want it or not

Would you install apps from outside the App Store? And will more countries follow Australia's lead?
