Apple has finally put a touchscreen on a Mac. 9to5Mac reports that the redesigned MacBook Pro uses a new tandem OLED panel Apple calls PROLED XDR, replacing Mini-LED, with touch built directly into the display

Peak HDR brightness rises from 1,600 to 2,000 nits. The laptops use the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, with up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage. Both sizes are thinner and lighter, with the 14 inch model dropping from 3.5 to 3 pounds and the 16 inch from 4.7 to 4 pounds

Other changes include a light up Apple logo, a redesigned hinge to keep the screen steady when touched, and a Dynamic Island replacing the notch, which Apple says will host Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri. Touch supports scrolling, pinch to zoom, drag and drop and window tiling, and MacRumors adds that it can be switched off

Prices start at $2,899 for the 14 inch and $3,399 for the 16 inch, in silver or space black with an optional nano-texture finish. Pre-orders opened on 28 October and deliveries begin on 6 November. Apple executive John Ternus posted that you have to touch it to believe it. The existing Mini-LED models remain on sale at their current prices with similar performance

Apple resisted touchscreen Macs for years, with Steve Jobs famously arguing that vertical touch screens are uncomfortable, so this is a big change in philosophy. Touch ID remains, but there is no Face ID or cellular option, and the article does not mention Apple Pencil support. The price is steep, but the screen sounds superb

Would you use a touchscreen on a MacBook? And is the OLED display worth the premium over the Mini-LED models?
