Apple updated the Mac mini this week in an uncharacteristic August launch, keeping the exact same external design while adding the new M6 and M5 Pro chips and, notably, a new record high starting price. The refresh comes almost two years after the redesigned M4 Mac mini launched, and arrives right as wait times for the outgoing M4 model had stretched to two months, suggesting Apple was cutting it close on supply before this replacement arrived.

The M6 chip uses a 2 nanometer process and packs a 12 core CPU with two new super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores, which Apple says delivers up to 1.2 times faster multithreaded performance than the M5 and up to 2.4 times faster than the original M1. The 12 core GPU pairs each core with its own Neural Accelerator, part of what Apple calls a nearly 30 percent jump in peak AI compute compared to the M5 and more than eight times faster than the M1. Apple's chief hardware officer Johny Srouji specifically framed the update around AI performance, describing the Mac mini as increasingly serving as an always on agentic device alongside its more traditional roles as a home computer or studio workhorse.

The base M6 Mac mini ships with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD for 899 dollars, the highest starting price the Mac mini has ever carried. The step up M5 Pro model, with an 18 core CPU option, 20 core GPU option, 24GB of memory, and a 512GB SSD, starts at 1,699 dollars. Both configurations include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and upgraded 2.5Gb Ethernet, though Thunderbolt support differs between them, the base M6 model sticks with three Thunderbolt 4 ports while the M5 Pro version gets three Thunderbolt 5 ports alongside HDMI and Ethernet.

Preorders opened August 25, with both models shipping September 22. Given how quickly the outgoing M4 model sold through and pushed into lengthy wait times, and how record setting this new starting price already is, anyone specifically wanting a launch day unit is being advised to order as soon as preorders go live rather than waiting to see how initial demand plays out

899 dollars for the base configuration is a real jump from where the Mac mini started even just a couple generations ago. Apple clearly isn't treating this as the budget entry point into the Mac lineup anymore the way it used to be positioned

The memory and storage crunch happening industry wide right now probably explains a good chunk of this price increase beyond just the new chip itself. Every company buying RAM and NAND flash this year is paying considerably more than they were even twelve months ago, and Apple passing at least some of that cost along to Mac mini buyers specifically isn't surprising given how aggressively other companies have already done the same thing with their own hardware lines

16GB of base memory in 2026, on a machine explicitly marketed around agentic AI workloads, feels a little stingy given how memory hungry a lot of local AI tools and models actually are in practice. Wonder how much real world friction that specific configuration runs into once someone tries to actually use it for anything beyond fairly light AI tasks

Keeping the exact same external design for a second consecutive generation is a smart, practical move given how well received the M4 redesign already was when it first launched. No reason to mess with a form factor that clearly already works well and that people already like, just update what's actually inside it

Curious how real world battery life and thermal performance under sustained AI workloads specifically compares between the base M6 model and the step up M5 Pro configuration. The marketing numbers always sound great on a spec sheet, but sustained performance under an actual demanding AI workload over an extended period often tells a considerably different and more nuanced story than a quick benchmark run does
