Anyone using a Chromebook as their main machine?

It feels like software bloat is half the problem now.

I am not convinced every upgrade is worth what people claim.

I suspect the answer is more nuanced than it first looks, which is why I wanted to ask people who have been there.

I want to know what the second year of doing this looks like, not just the first week.

Agree completely, preparation is everything. Usually the annoying part is not the job itself, it is fixing the bit you did not plan for.

Post a photo when it is done.

A clean install solves things but it is not always practical

That works if you are disciplined about it, most people are not. The best deals are usually the ones that do not get advertised loudly.

Chromebooks have surprised me more than I expected. My old assumption was that they were just cheap school laptops, but a decent model with a good screen and keyboard can handle browsing, writing, streaming and light coding without drama. The lack of clutter is actually refreshing

Used a Chromebook as my daily machine for about two years. The biggest adjustment was accepting that not every desktop app needs a replacement. Google Docs, web apps, Android apps and Linux support covered nearly everything I needed.

The one thing that pushed me back to Windows was photo editing. Once you start needing serious offline tools, the Chromebook can feel like it is asking you to compromise.

The funny thing is that a Chromebook is probably closer to what most people actually need than the £1000 laptops they buy. Email, banking, YouTube, documents and a bit of browsing does not require a machine that could launch a spaceship

There is a lot of truth in the software bloat argument. Some modern laptops spend half their life updating things nobody asked for. A Chromebook turns on quickly and stays out of the way, which is a pretty underrated feature.
