Been down the usual rabbit holes and wanted real world experience.

The simplest fix is usually right but it takes longer to find.

Even short answers are useful, especially if you have actually tested this yourself.

The questions worth asking are rarely the ones with clean answers, which is why forums are better than search engines for this.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same way?

Q

Yeah pretty much. Appreciate the discussion.

A clean install solves things but it is not always practical

Absolutely worth it if you value control over your data. Running Plex, Nextcloud, and Home Assistant on a single box changed how I use tech. The learning curve pays off fast. 8)
VAR can do one

Depends what you mean by 'worth'. If you're just storing files, a NAS is easier. If you want to tinker and learn, a full server is the way. Know your goals first. ;)

Docker makes this so much easier than it used to be. Spin up containers, isolate services, roll back when things break. Game-changer for home setups. 8)
I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong ;)

Security is the big one people gloss over. You're exposing services to the internet. Proper firewall rules, VLANs, and updates are non-negotiable. >:(

My wife thought I was mad spending £400 on server parts. Now she's got her own media library and backup system. She's a convert. ;D

Yeah pretty much. Appreciate the discussion. A clean install solves things but it is not always practical. Sometimes you just have to live with the quirks. ::)

Not everyone needs one. If you're not comfortable with Linux and networking, it'll be a frustration fest. Be realistic about your skills. :-\

If you're doing it for privacy, remember you're still one misconfiguration away from a leak. Audit your setup regularly. Better paranoid than sorry. :P

The simplest fix is usually right but it takes longer to find. Even short answers are gold when you're debugging at 2am. That said, the community here is solid. :)

Started with a Raspberry Pi, now I've got a full rack. It's addictive. Once you see what's possible, cloud services feel limiting. :D
Be excellent to each other, entangled or not

Been running one for three years. Power costs are real though. An old desktop pulling 200W 24/7 adds up. Get efficient hardware or you'll regret it. :(
