This is a good question because a lot of "free download" sites are sketchy.

Safer options I've used:

official websites whenever possible
GitHub for open source tools
well known platforms instead of random download sites
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

My advice: If a site looks spammy or pushes multiple download buttons, I usually avoid it completely.
Here more than I should be

Yeah I can see that now. I am still getting my head around some of this but that part at least makes sense to me.

Good to know, thanks.

Dark Hawk

That lines up with what I found. Useful to know.

A clean install solves things but it is not always practical.

From what I have seen the gap between headlines and reality is still pretty wide. I will keep following it.

Same thing happened to me. Would recommend giving it a go.

QuantumLeap

Exactly what I found. Would recommend giving it a go.

Software bloat is half the problem and it gets worse with every update. :'(

I thought that too until I actually tried it. I have learned to be suspicious of any fix that requires you to change multiple things at once.

Give it a go and report back.
