Bitcoin has been around since 2009, yet many people still find it confusing. Family gatherings often include someone asking what it is, whether it is a scam or why anyone would bother. Explaining it simply, without jargon or hype, is surprisingly hard. I thought it would be useful to collect the best short explanations

I am keeping this to the technology and the idea behind it, not prices, trading or whether anyone should buy it. The core concepts include a shared public ledger, called the blockchain, that records every transaction. Thousands of computers around the world keep copies of it, so no single company or government controls it. Transactions are secured by cryptography, and new bitcoins are created through a process called mining

My own two minute version goes something like this. Imagine a giant shared notebook that records every payment ever made, copied on thousands of computers worldwide. Nobody can change past entries without everyone noticing. Bitcoin is the money recorded in that notebook, and it exists without a bank in the middle

Analogies help a lot, but they can also mislead. Please share the explanation you use, and how relatives have reacted. Simple, honest explanations that admit the downsides as well as the benefits tend to work best. Plain language beats technical terms every time
