In 2008, in the middle of a global financial crisis caused partly by trusted institutions failing badly, someone using the name Satoshi Nakamoto published a short paper proposing a different way to move money, one that removed banks and other trusted middlemen from the process entirely. Instead of trusting one institution to keep an accurate record of who owns what, the idea was to distribute copies of that record across thousands of independent computers and use mathematics, rather than trust, to keep everyone honest

The simplest way to picture it is a shared spreadsheet that thousands of people can see at once. Whenever someone adds a new entry, every copy updates at the same time, but unlike an ordinary shared document, nobody, not the original creator, not an administrator, not anyone at all, can go back and quietly edit a previous entry. Transactions get bundled into blocks, and each new block is cryptographically linked to the one before it, so altering anything in the past would mean unraveling and redoing everything that came after it too, a task that becomes practically impossible as the chain grows longer

This is why the phrase don't trust, verify became something of an unofficial motto in Bitcoin communities, the entire system is designed so that you never have to simply take someone's word for it, you can check the math and the public record yourself. It comes with real tradeoffs though, this level of decentralization and security is part of why Bitcoin can only process a small number of transactions per second compared to a traditional payment network, a limitation often called the blockchain trilemma, since maximizing decentralization, security and speed all at once has proven to be genuinely difficult for any blockchain to pull off
