Not a shilling thread. Not looking for token recommendations without reasoning. Genuine discussion of what is happening in the wider crypto ecosystem beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum and what has caught people's attention for technical or use-case reasons.

The altcoin landscape has consolidated significantly since the 2021 season. Many projects that had large market caps then are now effectively dead. What remains and what has emerged that is worth understanding?

Solana's developer ecosystem has genuinely developed since 2021. The speed and cost advantages are real for certain use cases. Whether the concentration concerns have been adequately addressed is a legitimate question I do not have a confident answer to.

The layer 2 ecosystem on Ethereum is where most of the interesting development is happening right now rather than independent L1 chains. Arbitrum and similar protocols have captured developer attention in a way that most alt-L1s have not.

Privacy coins have gotten significantly harder to use due to exchange delistings and regulatory pressure. The use case for financial privacy is legitimate but the regulatory environment has made the practical accessibility worse.

Most of what has a large market cap does not deserve it. This is true of crypto broadly and altcoins specifically. The survivorship bias in which projects people discuss is significant.

DeFi primitives have matured. The yield farming frenzy of 2021 is gone but the underlying protocols for decentralised exchange and lending are more robust and more used for genuine financial activity than they were then.
Still figuring it all out

I look at technical development activity and developer count rather than price or market cap when assessing altcoin projects. Price follows development eventually in the ones that survive. Most do not survive.

The quantum resistance angle is becoming more relevant to altcoin selection for long-term holders. Some newer chains have built post-quantum cryptography in from the start. Bitcoin and Ethereum will need to upgrade. That is a non-trivial difference in risk profile.

Honestly the most interesting development in the wider ecosystem is the infrastructure for AI agents to transact autonomously. Whether that actually happens at scale or remains a niche use case is one of the more genuinely open questions in crypto right now.
