Apple's new boss has set out his view on artificial intelligence. TechCrunch reports that John Ternus, the long time Apple executive who became chief executive at the start of September, told Wired that Apple does not want to ship AI for AI's sake

Ternus said he likes where Apple is on AI, while acknowledging that everyone has an opinion. He said Apple is absolutely going to use AI in new products, but that when it is done right, people should not have to think about whether AI or traditional software made something happen

Asked whether AI agents could make apps unnecessary, he said that could make life very easy, but that creating products is a deeply human and personal thing

Apple has often been described as behind in AI over the past couple of years. It delayed a more powerful version of Siri, which finally launched this summer

The message fits Apple's traditional approach of focusing on finished products rather than being first. Critics will say it is a way of explaining away a slow start. Either way, a new chief executive setting a clear philosophy early is important

Is Apple right to take a cautious approach to AI? And what should Ternus prioritise first as chief executive?

Coffee first. Questions later.
