The artist has been anonymous since the late 90s, and despite endless speculation, investigations, and even academic studies trying to identify him, the mystery remains intact. Some people think it's a collective rather than one person, which would explain the prolific output across different cities.

The most popular theory is that Banksy is Robin Gunningham, a Bristol-born artist born in 1974. This came from a 2008 investigation that used geographic profiling to link his known works to locations Gunningham had lived. But it's never been proven, and Banksy himself hasn't confirmed it.

He's a member of Massive Attack, the Bristol-based music group, and some people have noticed correlations between Banksy pieces appearing and the band's tour locations. One thing that fascinates me is how Banksy's work has become mainstream despite being fundamentally anti-establishment. You can buy Banksy mugs, t-shirts, and posters in high street shops. The irony is so thick you could spread it on toast. He'd probably hate it, which makes it even more perfect.
