Galleries and museums make some of the best days out going, and many of the biggest ones in the UK are free to enter. Even so, some are worth travelling a long way for, while others are best enjoyed on a rainy afternoon if you happen to be nearby. I am curious which galleries and exhibitions members would recommend making a special journey for

The obvious big names include the National Gallery, Tate Modern, the British Museum and Kelvingrove in Glasgow. Further afield, there are the Louvre, the Rijksmuseum, the Prado, the Uffizi and MoMA, all of which attract millions of visitors. But some of the best experiences seem to come from smaller places, like a sculpture park, a converted mill or a single room gallery in a seaside town

My recommendation is Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield. It has huge works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and many others, spread across hundreds of acres of parkland. You can spend a whole day walking between sculptures, with sheep wandering around them. It feels completely different from a normal gallery, and children love it too

Temporary exhibitions count as well, especially if they are touring or coming up soon. Please include rough ticket prices if they are not free, and any tips for avoiding the crowds. Hidden gems that most people have never heard of are especially welcome

Which gallery or exhibition is worth a special trip? And which famous one disappointed you?
