What's a piece of art that completely changed how you look at art in general

[Neil57]

Stood in front of a Rothko for the first time expecting to feel nothing, it's literally just blocks of color, and instead genuinely got emotional in a way I still can't fully explain to people who haven't experienced it themselves

There's usually one specific moment people can point to where art stopped being decoration and started actually meaning something, curious what that piece was for other people here and what it actually did to shift things

Not necessarily asking for your favorite piece, more the one that genuinely rewired something in how you think about the whole medium afterward

[DarkLantern]

A Vermeer painting in a museum I wasn't even planning to visit properly, the light in it looked almost photographic and it completely changed how I understood what oil paint could actually do

[Quanta]

Rothko did it for me too honestly, stood there for probably fifteen minutes just quietly overwhelmed and couldn't articulate why at the time

[Brittle Ruby]

Seeing a Basquiat in person after only knowing it from prints, the actual texture and layering completely changes the piece, photos don't capture any of it

[Policy Wizard]

A random street photographer's work I stumbled onto at a small gallery, made me realize art didn't need grandness to hit hard, just genuine honest observation

[Taker29]

A Georgia O'Keeffe flower painting up close, the scale alone completely reframed how I think about looking closely at ordinary things

[Cheugy89]

Monet's water lilies at the actual scale they were painted, the room wraps completely around you and it's the first time art made me feel physically enveloped rather than just observed

[TeaSpiller]

Guernica, seeing the actual size of it in person hit completely differently than any photo ever could, the scale is doing genuine emotional work you just can't get from a book
