This argument's been going for over a century now and somehow still gets people genuinely heated at gallery openings, curious where people here actually land on it in 2026

My own honest take is that the medium clearly stopped mattering decades ago and the actual question is whether a specific work shows intention, composition and genuine perspective, which photography obviously can and regularly does deliver

Worth separating this from the snapshot versus fine art photography question too, since I think a lot of the skepticism is really about volume and accessibility rather than the medium itself

Settled decades ago as far as I'm concerned, anyone still arguing photography isn't fine art hasn't spent real time with the work of the great documentary and fine art photographers

I think the accessibility argument is actually the real hidden objection here, people conflate everyone having a camera with everyone being an artist, which obviously isn't true of painting either even though everyone technically has hands

Still think there's something different about the mechanical capture versus building an image from nothing, though I'll grant that composition and timing require real artistic skill regardless

Depends entirely on the photographer honestly, plenty of photography is just documentation, and plenty of it is composed fine art, the medium itself isn't the deciding factor

The debate feels increasingly generational to me, younger people mostly don't even question it anymore, it's really an older institutional argument that's slowly fading out on its own
