Phone video stabilisation has improved massively, so I keep wondering whether gimbals are still worth carrying. The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 Smartphone Gimbal still looks useful for smooth movement, tracking shots and mobile filmmaking, but phones already do a surprisingly good job handheld.

For casual clips, a gimbal may be overkill. For creators filming reels, short documentaries, studio walkthroughs or behind the scenes art videos, it might still make footage look much more intentional.

Do phone gimbals still earn their place in a creative kit, or have modern phones made them mostly unnecessary?

A gimbal still looks better when you are walking or doing planned movements. Phone stabilisation is good, but it can look slightly artificial when pushed hard.

Most people buy gimbals and use them twice.

They are useful, but only if you are willing to carry them, balance them and think about shots properly

For art process videos, they are great. Slow controlled movement across a canvas or studio setup looks much more polished than shaky handheld footage

I think phones killed the need for gimbals for normal people.

Creators may still benefit, but the average person filming holidays will not bother after the novelty fades

The best thing about a gimbal is that it forces you to slow down.

You start planning movement instead of waving the phone around like you are documenting a mild emergency
Opinions are my own. Obviously. Dave
