AI companion apps have gotten popular enough now that this feels like a real relationship question rather than a hypothetical one, if you found out your partner regularly talked to an AI companion app, emotionally invested rather than just using it as a quick novelty, would that actually bother you and why

My own honest instinct is that it would depend enormously on what's actually being sought there, if someone's using it purely as a low stakes way to vent frustration or process their day that feels genuinely different from someone seeking real emotional intimacy or romantic validation from it instead of from their actual partner

There's an interesting parallel worth drawing to how people already feel about things like porn use, private journaling, or venting to a close friend, some of that gets a pass in most relationships as perfectly normal and healthy, some of it clearly crosses into a genuine breach of trust depending entirely on the specific relationship's own agreed boundaries

What makes AI companions feel genuinely different from those existing comparisons though is the illusion of a two way relationship specifically, a diary doesn't respond back to you with apparent affection, a friend has their own independent life and limits, an AI companion is designed from the ground up to be endlessly available and endlessly validating in exactly the way you personally want at any given moment

Curious whether people think this should be treated the same as any other form of emotional infidelity that couples already navigate constantly, or whether AI companions genuinely represent something new enough that existing relationship norms simply haven't caught up to it yet

The endlessly available and endlessly validating point is exactly what makes this different from a diary or even a friend, no human partner can compete with something engineered specifically to never disagree with you or have a bad day of their own
