I do a lot of writing for work - reports, proposals, client emails and some longer-form content. I have tried all three briefly but I have not committed to any subscription. All three have free tiers but the paid versions are substantially better apparently. I do not want to pay for all three. Which one would you actually recommend for writing tasks specifically and what makes it better than the alternatives?
Not financial advice. Not medical advice. Just vibes.

Claude for writing tasks specifically and it is not particularly close. The output reads like something a thoughtful person wrote rather than something assembled from training data. The tone calibration, the ability to match a specific voice you provide, and the quality of longer-form prose are all noticeably ahead of the alternatives for writing work

ChatGPT has the widest integration ecosystem and the best tool support for research tasks that accompany writing. If your writing involves a lot of factual research alongside the prose GPT-4o's web browsing and tool use are more mature. For pure prose quality Claude is still better in my experience
All original content unless stated

Gemini Ultra inside Google Workspace is the answer if you live in Google Docs. The in-document integration beats both Claude and ChatGPT for the specific workflow of writing inside a document because it has direct context of what you have already written without copy-paste

The free tier comparison: Claude's free tier is more capable for writing than either ChatGPT free or Gemini free in most tests. If budget is the constraint start with Claude free before paying for any subscription

The thing that differentiates Claude for writing specifically is the way it handles tone and register instructions. Tell it you want something formal but not stiff, or conversational but not flippant, and it executes that distinction more reliably than the others. That precision matters for client-facing professional writing
