People use AI and AGI like they mean the same thing sometimes, what's the actual difference?

AI generally refers to systems that are good at specific tasks, writing, image recognition, playing chess, even if they're extremely capable at that one thing. AGI, artificial general intelligence, refers to a system that can learn and reason across essentially any task at a human level, without being narrowly trained for each one specifically

There's honestly no universally agreed technical definition of AGI either, which is part of why the term gets thrown around so loosely, ask ten researchers and you might get slightly different answers

Simple way to think about it, current AI is broad but shallow across tasks, AGI would be broad and deep, actually understanding rather than just pattern matching extremely well

Think of it like this: AI is your calculator, AGI is a mathematician who also wants to argue about philosophy. :) Current AI systems are brilliant at specific tasks - they can write poetry, diagnose diseases, or beat you at chess - but they're all narrow specialists. Ask a chess AI to recommend a restaurant and it'll stare at you blankly (metaphorically, anyway). AGI, on the other hand, is the hypothetical system that can learn and reason across any domain a human can, with the same flexibility and generalization. The key difference is adaptability. Your phone's voice assistant can set a timer but can't suddenly decide to learn guitar. An AGI theoretically could. That said, we're nowhere near AGI yet - we're still in the "very impressive pattern matcher" phase. The confusion happens because marketing departments love to slap "AGI" on anything that seems clever. ;D
