Qualcomm is in early talks to acquire Tenstorrent for between eight and ten billion dollars. Tenstorrent is the AI chip company led by legendary chip designer Jim Keller using open RISC-V architecture. An acquisition would give Qualcomm serious competitive positioning against NVIDIA and AMD in AI infrastructure. Keller is one of the most respected chip architects in the industry having previously worked on chips at Apple AMD Intel and Tesla. The RISC-V angle is interesting because it represents an open alternative to ARM architecture. Qualcomm acquiring RISC-V expertise alongside Keller's team would be a significant statement of direction. The AI chip market is the most contested space in technology right now and Qualcomm has been watching from the sidelines while NVIDIA dominates.
