OpenAI temporarily paused new subscriptions and upgrades to its 200 dollar per month ChatGPT Pro plan, citing unprecedented demand for GPT-6 Astra just a week after the model's September 3rd launch. OpenAI product lead Thibault Sottiaux announced the move on X, explaining that the Pro tier puts the most strain on the company's systems, and that pausing it was the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible. Existing Pro subscribers keep full access unaffected, while all other plans, including the cheaper 100 dollar Pro tier, Plus, Go, and the API, remain fully available

Sottiaux had warned the day before that demand for Astra was really unprecedented, saying he hadn't seen anything like it even through OpenAI's previous periods of steep growth, and that the company was pulling all the levers possible to sustain it. The distinction between OpenAI's two Pro tiers matters here specifically, the 200 dollar Pro 20X plan is paused, but the cheaper 100 dollar Pro plan remains available, meaning anyone who needs Astra's Pro reasoning mode can still access it, just without the fourfold higher usage allowance the pricier tier offers

OpenAI hasn't disclosed how long the pause will last or provided specific daily sign-up numbers that would help illustrate the actual scale of demand. Curious what people think this reveals about the current state of AI infrastructure capacity generally, does even a company as well resourced as OpenAI hitting a hard demand ceiling this quickly suggest the whole industry is still meaningfully compute constrained, or is this more a reflection of Astra specifically striking an unusual chord with users

The truth is usually more complicated than the headline

Prioritizing existing users over new sign-ups is the sensible call here, protecting the experience of people already paying rather than degrading service broadly just to keep accepting new customers feels like the right tradeoff
