OpenAI just opened up its self serve Ads Manager that lets advertisers create, manage and optimise campaigns directly inside ChatGPT. They are reportedly targeting $2.5B in ad revenue this year and $100B annually by 2030, which is the kind of number that explains why Microsoft and OpenAI ended the exclusive partnership last month.

The platform supports both CPM and CPC models and integrates with Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, WPP, Adobe, Criteo and StackAdapt. OpenAI is making strong claims that ads will not influence organic outputs and that there are new privacy and measurement controls baked in.

The organic outputs claim is the part I am sceptical about. Anyone who has watched Google Search over the past fifteen years knows how that story ends. The conversational interface fundamentally blurs the line between answer and recommendation in a way that ten blue links never did

100B annual revenue target by 2030 is the entire reason this company exists, anyone surprised has not been paying attention

The Microsoft split makes complete sense in this context, OpenAI is becoming a media company not an infrastructure one

Honestly bring it on, free tier subsidised by ads is how the internet works

Yeah but the conversational format makes native advertising indistinguishable from genuine recommendation in a way display ads never were

Anyone else find it darkly funny that the company that started as a non profit is now building the most powerful targeted ad platform in history
