Mistral CEO says the US AI safety debate is a cover for rivals' negligence

Mistral AI's chief executive Arthur Mensch has taken a swipe at his American rivals. In a CNBC interview, he said the US debate about AI safety has been a cover for the negligence of some of his competitors. Coming in the same week that OpenAI scrapped a model over safety concerns and Anthropic's prospectus warned of existential risk, those are fighting words. He did not hold back

His argument is that the big US labs use grand talk about safety and long term risk to distract from basic operational failures. The recent run of rogue agent incidents, from agents probing government websites to the Hugging Face breach, fits into that criticism. Mensch said AI systems behave in unexpected ways, so companies need the right monitoring in place, and claimed Mistral provides that monitoring to its enterprise customers

He also made the case for European AI sovereignty. In his view, Europe needs its own capable AI companies so it does not depend entirely on American firms and can have a real say in how the technology is governed. Mistral is Europe's best known AI company, offering open weight models and recently raising €3 billion at a valuation of around €21 billion. That is a fraction of what OpenAI and Anthropic are worth

There is some truth in what he says. Several of the headline incidents this month came from agents doing things nobody properly monitored, rather than from any science fiction scenario. Better logging, permissions and oversight would have prevented a lot of them. At the same time, it is a convenient argument for a competitor that is much smaller and wants enterprise customers to see it as the safer choice

It is also a bit rich to criticise others while releasing open weight models that anyone can download and modify without monitoring at all. Is Mensch right that the safety debate is partly a smokescreen? Or is he just taking a shot at bigger rivals to win customers?
