A few years ago the flex was a fancy office, a wall of monitors and a loud mechanical keyboard. Now it feels like the new status symbol is having your own private AI infrastructure with local models, private storage, fast networking and no dependency on public APIs. I can see why founders like the idea, especially if they handle sensitive code or customer data, but I wonder how much of it is real operational advantage and how much is expensive theatre

It is absolutely a status symbol, but that does not make it useless. Sometimes expensive infrastructure becomes practical later

There is a privacy argument here that is not just ego. Some companies really cannot send everything to cloud AI services
