ChatGPT was the name that made AI assistants mainstream, and it still probably has the largest user base of any chatbot. But the field has genuinely gotten more competitive since then, with several other labs putting out models that beat it on specific benchmarks depending on the task. Curious whether people think ChatGPT still deserves the default best all rounder label or whether that reputation is mostly inertia at this point

For coding tasks specifically a lot of developers have switched to other tools entirely, and for long document analysis or nuanced writing some people prefer different models with bigger context windows or different tuning. The gap between the top labs has genuinely narrowed a lot compared to a couple years ago. Feels like the honest answer depends heavily on the specific task rather than one model winning everything
