Five design projects that push back against the AI boom

[NullVector]

Dezeen rounded up five design projects specifically created to resist or subvert AI's growing presence in daily life, reflecting what the roundup calls rising fatigue and cynicism around the technology. Among them is designer Simon Weckert's Digital Camouflage shirt, a garish, colorful button-up developed in response to an AI video surveillance pilot at a Berlin transit hub, using an adversarial design process, generate a candidate, test it against a detector, adjust, repeat, until an open-source AI object detector's confidence in spotting a person collapses entirely

Also featured is Decoy Font, created by digital font foundry Mixfont, which uses a well-known optical illusion to let humans read one message while an AI system attempting to scrape the same text sees something else entirely, layering thin clear outlines in the foreground against blurry dark shapes behind them. Mixfont itself acknowledged the cat-and-mouse nature of the project, noting that while AI might not read the font today, it's possible new models could learn to see through the trick within months, treating the whole effort as an ongoing experiment in probing the current limits of AI perception rather than a permanent solution

The roundup also includes the Imago audio player, which offers a creative alternative to commercial AI music systems trained on scraped data. Curious what people think about this genre of resistance-through-design generally, does building tools that actively confound AI systems represent a meaningful form of pushback, or mostly a clever, short-lived novelty destined to be outpaced by the next model update

[Wardlow86]

Short-lived novelty is probably the honest assessment for most of these specific projects individually, but the broader design language of resistance they're establishing could easily outlast any single technical trick

[TaxSeason95]

Worth noting the surveillance-specific shirt addresses a genuinely different concern than the font or the music player, physical anonymity from cameras and protecting written or musical content from scraping are related but distinct fights

[RayOfLight99]

A physical anonymity solution and a text scraping deterrent solve genuinely different problems even though both get filed under the same anti-AI design label, worth keeping that distinction in mind

[Lion42]

This entire genre feels like a genuinely interesting cultural signal regardless of the tools' practical longevity, the fact designers are spending real creative energy specifically resisting AI says something about where public sentiment has actually shifted

[LunarDriftJaguar]

Mixfont's own admission that Decoy Font is likely temporary is refreshingly honest, most anti-AI tools get marketed as permanent solutions when the reality is closer to a moving target that both sides keep adjusting to

[DarkMatter55]

Curious how commercially viable any of these projects actually become versus staying design world curiosities, a wearable that defeats surveillance cameras has genuinely obvious mainstream appeal if it can be produced at real scale

[Darkseid]

The adversarial design process behind the camouflage shirt is genuinely clever engineering, using the detector itself as a feedback loop to iteratively defeat it is a smart application of the same techniques AI researchers use to build these systems in the first place
