The European Commission selected the EUROPA Consortium led by Italian enterprise Domyn as the winner of its Frontier AI Grand Challenge. The consortium gets a dedicated 6000-chip NVIDIA Blackwell cluster and up to 2.5 percent of EuroHPC's high-performance supercomputing capacity. The task is building a sovereign open-source model exceeding 400 billion parameters trained natively across all 24 official EU languages. The goal is that European universities hospitals and public institutions can deploy frontier-grade AI without routing sensitive training data through non-EU cloud infrastructure. This is Europe making a serious bet on technological sovereignty in AI rather than depending entirely on American models.

Open source training makes this interesting. If it's genuinely open the benefits extend beyond EU institutions

Italian company Domyn leading this is an interesting choice. Not the obvious EU AI powerhouses like France or Germany

Training natively in 24 languages rather than translating is the right approach. Translation loses nuance
It's not a bug, it's a feature

2.5 percent of EuroHPC capacity is significant. That's a real commitment of shared European infrastructure
Just here for the craic :)

This positions Europe as third pole in AI alongside US and China. Whether they can execute is the question
Still figuring it all out
