Cloudflare launches Kitesurf, a cloud-hosted browser built specifically for AI agents

Cloudflare has launched Kitesurf, a genuinely different kind of web browser built specifically for AI agents rather than humans, joining a growing race among tech companies to build the infrastructure layer AI agents will need to actually navigate the web the way people do

The core insight behind Kitesurf is that a browser designed for AI agents needs to optimize for completely different things than one designed for humans, Cloudflare explained in its announcement that unlike traditional browsers, an agent browser doesnt care about visual elements like themes, tabs or extensions, instead it needs to manage context windows, performance, token costs and scalability, and it faces a genuinely different threat model too, since an AI browser can be subject to vulnerabilities like prompt injection attacks that a human using a browser normally wouldnt need to worry about in the same way

With Kitesurf, AI developers get to build software that navigates websites, fills out forms and completes other browser based tasks without having to build their own browser software from scratch, Cloudflare says it decided to build this just 12 weeks ago, and it runs entirely on top of the companys serverless Workers platform, its available for free while in beta through Cloudflares Browser Run product, which lets developers programmatically control headless browser instances across Cloudflares network

The genuinely compelling pitch for developers is efficiency, Cloudflare says Kitesurf is significantly more efficient in CPU and memory consumption than Chromium for common agentic tasks like taking screenshots and extracting HTML, which directly keeps computing costs down for anyone running AI agents at scale, the browser itself was built by combining several other open source technologies, a modular rendering engine from Blitz, Firefoxs CSS parser Stylo, and Boa JS, a Rust based ECMAScript engine, with everything else running inside Cloudflare Workers

Despite being new, Cloudflare says Kitesurf already passes more than 215,000 web platform tests and is adding hundreds more every week, the company credits an open source Rust headless engine called Obscura for inspiring the project, noting the first proof of concept was actually a port of Obscura to Workers, and says the browser already correctly renders real world pages including TodoMVC, a popular benchmark for comparing JavaScript frameworks, plus Wikipedia, Hacker News and much of Cloudflares own dashboard and blog
