China's tech progress is apparently causing genuine chaos between Silicon Valley and the White House right now and the split in opinion among the big companies is fascinating

On one side you have firms like Anthropic pointing to national security risks and shrinking margins as reasons to push for real trade barriers against cheap Chinese open source models, and on the other side you have Microsoft, Meta and Nvidia actively lobbying to keep things open and unrestricted

The trigger for a lot of this seems to be free and very capable Chinese models like Moonshot's Kimi which are undercutting the pricing of proprietary Western systems, and US companies are apparently increasingly happy to just use the Chinese open source stuff because it's cheap and nearly as good

Behind closed doors there's talk that the administration considered putting some Chinese AI labs on the Entity List which would essentially cut off US access without a special license, and there was also apparently discussion of a security advisory basically discouraging companies from touching Chinese models at all

What strikes me is how this splits along business model lines rather than some simple us versus them line, the companies that make money selling AI access want protection and the companies that make money selling chips or platforms just want as many models running on their stuff as possible regardless of origin

It really does feel like a preview of a much bigger fight over open weight models and where the line gets drawn between innovation and security concerns

This is the part of the AI race that gets underreported, everyone talks about model benchmarks but the actual policy fight over who gets to use what is going to shape the industry way more

Anthropic pushing for restrictions while Meta and Microsoft push the opposite way makes total sense once you realize their business models are basically opposites here
