OpenAI has added a virtual try on feature to ChatGPT shopping. TechCrunch reports that you can upload a selfie or full body photo, then see how clothes and accessories would look on you. A new Try On button appears in ChatGPT's shopping results, or you can upload a screenshot of an item from anywhere and ask ChatGPT to try it on you. It is rolling out alongside a Favorites library for saving products and try on images

The feature runs on OpenAI's new ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. OpenAI says it produces more natural lighting and richer textures, follows editing instructions more reliably and generates images faster. That matters for clothing, where fabric texture and how something hangs make a big difference. A try on that looks like a cut out paper doll is not much use

There are other shopping features too. You can describe a style and ask ChatGPT to put outfits together, or upload a photo of a celebrity and ask it to find similar items you can buy. That last one is a clever use of image understanding, and probably the feature people will use most for fun. It turns ChatGPT into a sort of personal stylist

Google launched its own virtual try on last year, so OpenAI is catching up rather than leading here. TechCrunch also notes that OpenAI previously dropped an instant checkout feature that did not perform well. Shopping is clearly an area OpenAI wants to crack, because that is where advertising and affiliate money lives. It also has to compete with Pinterest, Amazon and Google, which already dominate product discovery

The privacy side is the bit I would want to understand before uploading full body photos to a chatbot. How long are they kept, and are they used for training? Would you use a feature like this? And do AI try ons look realistic enough to help you decide what to buy?
