Topic: Can local open source LLMs realistically replace cloud AI subscriptions?   Views(Read 14 times)

Local open source LLMs are improving fast, and the idea of running private AI without monthly subscriptions is very tempting. The catch is that the best cloud models still feel stronger for difficult reasoning, coding and long context work. I think local models could replace cloud subscriptions for private notes, simple automation, offline search and light coding help, but replacing everything is a much tougher claim
Opinions are my own. Obviously. Dave

For privacy focused tasks, local wins even when the model is weaker. Keeping the data in house matters

Cloud models are still better when the task gets weird or complex. That gap has not vanished

The real cost is not just hardware. It is time spent setting things up and keeping it all working

I use local models for drafts and cloud models for anything that needs a sharper brain
