Huge news today from Anthropic. After 15 days offline following the June 12 US government export control directive, Anthropic confirmed on June 27 that the government has authorised Mythos 5 to be redeployed to a set of US organisations that operate and defend critical infrastructure. Fable 5 remains unavailable for general use but this is the first concrete forward movement since the ban landed. Anthropic said they are restoring access quickly for these organisations and continuing to work with the government to expand Mythos 5 access and eventually bring Fable 5 back for everyone.

This is a partial win rather than a full restoration. The government is clearly distinguishing between organisations that actively defend critical infrastructure and the general public. That framing matches what we have been seeing in the background throughout the ban. The NSA Director's senate testimony framing Mythos as capable of autonomously breaching classified systems in hours made it very clear this was about who can hold that capability, not just whether it can be patched.

For the developers and enterprises that have had pipelines broken since June 12 this is still not the news they needed. Fable 5 still returns errors for everyone. But for the cybersecurity firms, utilities, financial institutions and defence contractors that were using Mythos through Project Glasswing, today's announcement restores something genuinely important. The path to full restoration now has a shape even if it does not yet have a date.
