Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork into one interface, adds Docs and Slides

Anthropic announced it is folding Claude's regular chat interface and its more autonomous Cowork product into a single unified experience, removing the need to decide upfront whether a given task belongs in one mode or the other. Under the new setup users simply describe what they need and Claude figures out which capability to deploy, whether that means answering a quick question directly or spinning up a longer running task that searches the web, reads files, runs code, and assembles a finished result while you do something else entirely.

Alongside the merger, Anthropic introduced two new beta tools, Claude Docs and Claude Slides, plus a wider rollout of Claude Design directly into every conversation rather than keeping it as a separate standalone product. Claude Docs lets multiple people collaborate on a document in real time, with Claude drafting sections and leaving comments alongside human editors much like Google Docs, while Claude Slides lets you build a full presentation inside a single conversation and then export it as an editable PowerPoint or PDF file. Everything made across Design, Docs, and Slides lives at one shareable link that opens cleanly on a phone.

The change is explicitly framed around portability and reducing friction for teams already running on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, since documents and slides created in Claude export straight into the file formats those existing office ecosystems already expect. Anthropic said the frustration users kept reporting was less about any single feature and more about having to constantly decide where a task belonged, since work started in chat did not carry over into Cowork and vice versa.

The timing lines up with a broader industry pattern of AI companies racing to build a single everything app for enterprise customers, following OpenAI's July launch of ChatGPT Work, which similarly bundled its chatbot with the Codex coding tool. The rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers across web, desktop, and mobile over the coming weeks, with Team and Free tier users getting access later, and Anthropic's separate coding focused product, Claude Code, remains a standalone offering for now rather than being folded into this same unified interface

Removing the upfront decision of whether a task belongs in chat or Cowork is exactly the kind of friction reduction that sounds minor on paper but genuinely changes how comfortable people feel actually using a tool day to day. Having to consciously categorize your own request before even starting is a small but real cognitive tax that most users probably were not even consciously aware was slowing them down until it got removed
