Anthropic launches Opus 5, cheaper and less restricted than its flagship Fable model

Anthropic released Opus 5, the newest version of its long standing heavyweight model, just two months after Opus 4.8 became available in late May. While Opus 5 is smaller than Fable 5, Anthropic says it is both cheaper and less restrictive, and it reportedly outperforms Fable 5 on a number of benchmarks included in the announcement, likely making it the preferable option for most use cases going forward

Anthropic emphasized that Opus 5 is much stronger at verifying its own work and iterating carefully until it succeeds, citing benchmark testing where the model wrote its own computer vision pipeline in response to an intentionally incomplete prompt. Opus 5 also is not subject to the 30 day data retention policy that covers Fable and Mythos, addressing a concern some privacy conscious users had raised about those two models

Meaningful safeguards remain in place around cybersecurity tasks specifically, Opus 5 cannot be used to scan for vulnerabilities in a compiled software binary, though it is permitted to search for vulnerabilities in source code since that use case is considered more likely to serve defensive purposes. Anthropic expects these safety classifiers to trigger 85% less often for Opus 5 than for Fable 5, and is also rolling out a new opt in beta feature called Automatic Fallbacks, which automatically routes a request to a less powerful model instead of returning an error whenever a prompt trips the safety classifier
