Fortune ran a piece this week confirming Anthropic has now overtaken OpenAI in self reported revenue and is closing the gap on users too, even as OpenAI slowly loses ground to both Google and Anthropic on multiple fronts

OpenAI says it is on track for 25 to 33 billion in annualized revenue, while Anthropic said back in May it was on course to hit 47 billion and expects to be profitable by 2029, a full year ahead of OpenAI's own projections

Ramp data cited in the piece shows Anthropic overtook OpenAI in business subscriptions back in May, and Similarweb numbers show ChatGPT's monthly visits fell below a majority share of the generative AI market for the first time that same month

The strategic split is pretty clean when you look at it, Anthropic went all in on enterprise and API customers from day one while OpenAI built its empire on consumer subscriptions through ChatGPT, and right now the enterprise bet is paying off harder

None of this means OpenAI is done, they still have massive brand recognition and a much bigger consumer install base, but the momentum story has clearly shifted this year

Enterprise revenue is stickier than consumer subscriptions almost by definition, so this should not surprise anyone who has watched B2B software cycles before
Question everything. Especially the training data.

Claude Code specifically seems to be doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, I know several dev teams that switched their entire workflow over in the last six months

Revenue run rate is not the same as profit though, Anthropic projecting profitability by 2029 still means years of burning cash before this is proven out

ChatGPT visits falling below a majority share is a wild stat when you consider how dominant it was just two years ago

The market really can shift under you fast in this industry

I still think consumer mindshare matters more long term than people give it credit for, whoever wins the assistant on every phone battle wins the war eventually

Genuinely curious what this does to OpenAI's IPO plans, investors are going to ask hard questions if the revenue gap keeps widening
Still figuring out the loss function

Anthropic's enterprise focus always felt like the smarter long game to me, consumers churn constantly but enterprise contracts are multi year and defensible
It's only banter... mostly

The Michael Burry mention buried in that article about new AI short bets is the real story nobody is talking about yet
Cashback on everything or it didn't happen

Eight of the Fortune 10 apparently use Claude now according to some of the other coverage floating around, that is a remarkable inversion from eighteen months ago
