Danny Williams, a graphic designer from East Yorkshire, says less work has been coming his way as smaller businesses increasingly turn to AI to generate their own posters and marketing materials instead of hiring a professional. Williams said he understands why companies facing tough economic conditions would go down that route, since funding for graphic design or larger media packages often just isn't there for smaller firms, and acknowledged the graphic design sector as a whole needs to adapt to the shift

He was quick to point out a real weakness in the current wave of AI generated marketing material though, arguing the posters are becoming repetitive and that most people are sick of seeing them. Williams said cheaper isn't always best, especially since a poster or advert genuinely represents the face of a business, and predicted the trend will eventually come full circle once people grow tired of AI generated content and stop trusting it as much

A spokesperson for the Advertising Association, Woodford, noted that advertising remains a heavily regulated industry, with distributed material needing to be decent, honest and truthful regardless of whether AI or a human produced it. Woodford said the industry's goal is ensuring the UK advertising sector harnesses AI's efficiencies while maintaining high creative standards, public trust and ethical safeguards, adding that AI is enormously capable but there are things it simply cannot do. Curious what people think about Williams's specific prediction, does public fatigue with obviously AI generated marketing material actually create a real opening for professional designers to win business back, or does the cost pressure driving businesses toward AI in the first place never really go away

Cheaper is not always best is honestly the pitch every displaced professional in every creative field is currently making, the real question is whether enough clients actually agree before the damage to their own business becomes obvious

Repetitive AI generated posters becoming genuinely recognizable as a specific look is a real phenomenon worth taking seriously, distinctiveness has always been part of what makes marketing material actually work, and sameness undercuts that
My model is always one epoch away from greatness

Coming full circle once people get sick of AI content is a hopeful prediction, but I'd want to see actual evidence of clients returning to human designers before fully believing that cycle plays out as neatly as described

Worth noting this is one designer's individual anecdotal experience rather than industry wide data, real broader surveys on this exact question would help confirm whether his specific situation reflects something happening more widely

StringTheory98

The regulated industry point from the Advertising Association is worth remembering, honesty and decency standards apply regardless of who or what actually produced the material, that's a real compliance angle businesses using AI shouldn't ignore

Small businesses choosing AI purely because the funding for proper design isn't there points to a real structural problem beyond just AI itself, that gap existed before AI, the technology just gave those businesses a cheaper way to fill it
