Prompting well is table stakes now, the skills that will actually separate people in 2027 are further downstream. First is context engineering, knowing what background, examples and constraints to feed a model so it produces something usable on the first pass rather than the fifth. Second is verification literacy, being able to quickly spot a plausible sounding but wrong AI output before it goes into a report, a contract or a customer message

Third is workflow design, chaining several AI steps together into something that reliably does a real job end to end, rather than treating every task as a fresh one-off chat. Fourth is knowing when not to use AI at all, recognizing tasks where a quick manual check or a phone call is genuinely faster and safer than setting up an automated pipeline. Fifth is data hygiene, since every one of the first four skills falls apart if the underlying information feeding the model is messy, outdated or simply wrong
