1,100 AI workers just asked Washington to slow the whole industry down

So this dropped yesterday and it is honestly a bigger deal than most of the model release news this week, over 1,100 employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta signed an open letter asking the US government to help build a pacing mechanism for advanced AI

It is not a call to stop everything tomorrow, what they actually want is technical and governance infrastructure that would let a coordinated slowdown happen if systems start advancing faster than anyone can safely oversee them, which is a much more measured ask than the headlines make it sound

What gets me is the names attached, two Anthropic cofounders signed this along with OpenAI's chief scientist and Meta's chief scientist, these are not outside critics lobbing stones from Twitter, these are the people literally building the frontier models

When the builders themselves are asking for guardrails it tells you something about what they are seeing internally that we are not

My honest take is this letter will get dismissed by a lot of accelerationist voices as PR cover, but I think that read is too cynical given who put their name on it, worth watching whether Washington actually does anything with this or just files it away

I get the cynicism but Jack Clark and Jared Kaplan cofounded the company that would benefit most from just racing ahead, why sabotage your own moat

Because a pacing mechanism that applies to everyone protects the company that is currently ahead just as much as it slows down the ones behind, that is not altruism that is strategy
