Foldable phones have been around for several years now, with Samsung, Google, Motorola, Honor, Oppo and others selling models that fold like a book or flip like an old clamshell. Early versions had fragile screens, visible creases and very high prices. Each generation has improved, with thinner designs, tougher hinges and better software. Some recent models are barely thicker than a normal phone when folded

Supporters say foldables offer the best of both worlds. A book style foldable gives you a small tablet in your pocket, which is great for reading, video and multitasking. Flip phones are compact and fun, and many people find them easier to carry. There is also a certain novelty, and owners often say they get asked about their phone constantly

Critics point to the price, the crease and concerns about durability. Repairs can be very expensive, and some people worry about dust getting into the hinge. Battery life and cameras have often lagged behind the best normal phones at the same price. Many people also ask whether they need a bigger screen at all, when they have a tablet at home

I am undecided. I tried a friend's book style foldable for an afternoon and loved reading on it, but the price made me wince. I can see them becoming normal in a few years, once prices come down. Or they may stay a niche product for enthusiasts

Are foldable phones the future or an expensive gimmick? And would you buy one?
Undefeated, unless you count every practice match
