Participants identified several long standing industry challenges as genuinely promising quantum use cases, including seismic imaging through elastic waveform simulation, new materials design and reservoir simulation, and production optimization covering hydraulic fracture optimization and well intervention strategy. The symposium was explicit that quantum computing isn't yet ready to replace high performance computing in current oil and gas workflows, but the industry needs to start identifying where it may actually matter first rather than waiting until the technology's fully mature

Quantum hardware itself splits roughly between natural qubits like atoms, ions and photons, and synthetic qubits built from superconductors or semiconductors, with most systems requiring extremely low operating temperatures to minimize thermal noise interference.
